GPS for construction and machinery: three scenarios, three devices
Monitoring a backhoe with its own battery is not the same as a compressor that moves between sites with no power supply. This page separates the three typical cases in the construction sector and tells you exactly which part number to order.

The sector's real problem: dust, water and theft
On site, a GPS is not installed the way it is in a van. Three factors rule: a dirty environment (cement dust, aggregate particles), pressurised water during end-of-day washes, and a machinery theft rate that in Spain runs to around 1,000 reports/year according to insurance-sector reports. Devices designed for cars die after 8 months; those designed for construction last the machine's service life.
IP67, IP68 and IP69K: what they really mean on site
The IP ratings of the IEC 60529 standard translate as follows for construction:
- IP67 — withstands immersion at 1 m for 30 min. Fine for a backhoe, dumper, standard aerial platform. Not fine for areas washed with an industrial pressure washer.
- IP68 — continuous immersion at a specified depth. Useful for a magnetic tracker that may end up under accumulated rainwater for days.
- IP69K — jet at 80 °C and 100 bar. Only this one withstands industrial washing with a high-temperature pressure washer. If you are going to fit the tracker on a concrete mixer that goes through a wash tunnel, IP69K is mandatory.
Practical tip: read the IP protection sheet and always ask for the specific figure. Saying "high IP" or "waterproof" without a number is marketing, not a specification.
Case 1: machinery with its own power supply
Excavators, backhoes, loaders, dumpers, self-propelled aerial platforms. They have a 12 or 24 V battery you can power the tracker from. Here the fight is environmental resistance and reading the machine's bus (some have a proprietary CAN, others J1939 if they are post-2010).
Recommended device: FMC234. IP67, 10–30 V power supply, 3 digital inputs (ignition, pressure switch, tilt sensor), 2 outputs (starter cut-off, beacon). Supports CAN-CONTROL for non-intrusive bus reading if the machine has one.
What you will be able to measure: actual hours of use (not the ones the operator declares), start/end of the working day on site, per-plot geofence and unauthorised exit events from the compound.
Case 2: machinery with frequent industrial washing
Concrete mixers, tanks, site vehicles that go through a wash tunnel or get a pressure washer daily. Here the FMC234 falls short: IP67 gives way to a jet at 80 °C and 100 bar. You need IP69K.
Recommended device: FTC880. IP69K housing, internal rechargeable battery (months of autonomy in report-once-a-day mode, weeks in standard mode), GNSS and 4G LTE. It is designed to be stuck or bolted to the chassis and forgotten about for a couple of years.
The FTC880 also solves the case of a tractor or vehicle that enters a wash-down area in an agricultural/livestock operation.
Case 3: assets with no power supply — pure anti-theft
Diesel generators, towable compressors, site cabins, warehouse containers, small generator sets, expensive tools consolidated on a pallet. They have no 12 V available, or not reliably.
Recommended device: TAT240. Standalone tracker, IP68, magnetic mounting (the base is a strong magnet that sticks to the metal chassis), very long-life internal battery (up to 5 years in low-consumption mode), 4G LTE.
It works in "scheduled report" mode: one position every X hours with the asset stationary, a burst of positions when it detects movement. That gives you up to years of autonomy without touching the device, and an immediate alert if someone takes the generator in the middle of the night.
Installation notes on site
- Antenna in line of sky. Excavator cabs with a sheet-metal roof attenuate the GNSS signal considerably. If the FMC234 goes inside the cab, connect an external GNSS antenna to the roof.
- Always a fuse. Heavy machinery battery at 24 V with hard starts: a 1 A or 2 A fuse is mandatory on the tracker's power line.
- Double-sided tape or magnetic mount, not internal screws, if the chassis belongs to the end customer (machinery rentals).
- SIM with an open APN and industrial M2M coverage. Sites are usually in peri-urban areas with patchy coverage: an FMC125 dual SIM can be reasonable if the main operator loses coverage on a fixed site.
Frequently asked questions
Does the TAT240 work inside a metal container?
Limited. The GNSS and 4G signal inside a closed container is heavily attenuated. If the container is always closed, it is best to fix the TAT240 magnetically to the outside roof; if it is opened frequently, inside can work but with less consistent reports.
How long does the TAT240 battery really last?
It depends on the reporting profile. In active mode (several reports/day) between 6 months and 2 years. In low-consumption mode (1 report/day + movement alarm) up to 5 years. An estimate can be calculated with Teltonika's battery calculator.
Can I read an excavator's engine hours without getting into the bus?
Yes, by connecting the FMC234's digital input to the ignition/contact line. You will not read the manufacturer's exact hours, but you will read actual operating hours, which is what is normally invoiced.
Is the same device suitable for machinery rental and for an owned fleet?
Yes, the hardware is the same. What changes is the platform: for rental you want one with billable-hours control and per-site geofences. We discuss the platform based on your volume.
What if I just want to locate the generator, nothing more?
Magnetic TAT240, a low-cost M2M SIM, a basic platform. Average order: 1 device per asset from a unit value of €1,500.
